Modern software for macOS PowerPC: overlay with fixes and new ports to use with MacPorts
PowerPC Ports
An overlay repository with fixes and new ports for running modern software on macOS PowerPC through MacPorts or PPCPorts.
Purpose
PowerPC Ports is an overlay repository with fixes and new ports to use with PPCPorts, also known as macos-powerpc/ppcports-base, or with mainstream MacPorts. The primary target system is macOS 10.6 Snow Leopard on PowerPC, and most ports are expected to work on modern macOS on x86_64 and arm64 as well. It exists to keep useful software building and running on aging PowerPC hardware.
Setup and support
The recommended setup is to install 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on PowerPC, or 10.5.8 Leopard on a G5 where ppc64 can be built, then install PPCPorts configured to use this repo on top of the mainstream MacPorts ports tree. Bug reports are accepted via Issues, but the project notes it is not associated with MacPorts and asks users not to open Trac tickets for these ports. Using the repo with mainstream MacPorts is possible but unsupported.
Organization
Commit history is preserved and pull requests are accepted. R related ports have been moved to a separate repository, R-ports, where PowerPC support is also maintained. The repository is mirrored on both Codeberg and GitHub. It is licensed BSD-3-Clause and reported thirty nine stars at indexing.
Editorial conclusion
The project is BSD-3-Clause licensed and reported thirty nine stars at indexing, mirrored on both Codeberg and GitHub.
