ChatDev 2.0: Dev All through LLM-powered Multi-Agent Collaboration
ChatDev: from a virtual software company to DevAll
ChatDev started as a multi agent software company and has grown into a zero code platform for orchestrating custom agent systems.
Two versions, one project
ChatDev has evolved from a specialized software development multi agent system into a comprehensive multi agent orchestration platform. The README presents the change as a genuine shift in direction. ChatDev 2.0 is called DevAll, and it is framed as a zero code multi agent platform for developing everything. The older 1.0 version still exists as a different model, and the README makes room for both.
The 2.0 direction
ChatDev 2.0, under the name DevAll, is described as a zero code platform for developing everything. Users build and execute customized multi agent systems through simple configuration, without writing code. Agents, workflows, and tasks are defined as the units of orchestration, and the README names scenarios like data visualization, 3D generation, and deep research as examples of what those orchestrations can target. The step from coding agents to configuring them is the whole point of the 2.0 rewrite.
The 1.0 model and the release notes
ChatDev 1.0 operates as a virtual software company. Intelligent agents such as CEO, CTO, and Programmer participate in specialized seminars to automate the software development life cycle, including designing, coding, testing, and documenting. That model served as the foundational paradigm for the community, per the README. The release notes add context: ChatDev 2.0 officially released in January 2026, with the classic version moved to a maintenance branch, and a paper on multi agent collaboration via evolving orchestration accepted to NeurIPS 2025, with the implementation available in a puppeteer branch of the repository. The two versions coexist in the same repository, which makes the evolution easy to trace for anyone coming from the 1.0 material.
