An address turns up in a log and the question is always the same: whose is it. This answers it from RIPEstat, the RIPE NCC's public routing data — the announcing autonomous system, the prefix the announcement covers, the registered network name and the country. That is the answer that helps when you are deciding whether traffic is a cloud provider, a residential ISP or a scanner, and it does not depend on a commercial geolocation database being right about a street.

How it works

  • Routing and registry data come from RIPEstat; nothing here needs an API key or an account.
  • The address you enter is sent to our server and on to RIPEstat — the one value that leaves the page.
  • Each lookup is saved to your history with the address and what it resolved to, so you can come back to it.

Where your data goes

This tool has to ask a service that your browser cannot reach directly, so the address or hostname you enter is sent to our server and on to that service. Only that value travels — never the rest of the page.

Common questions

How accurate is the location?
Country is usually right. City and coordinates come from a free geolocation database and are frequently wrong by hundreds of kilometres, especially for mobile networks and anycast addresses — 1.1.1.1 has no single physical location at all. Treat the ASN and the network name as the reliable facts.
What is an ASN and why does it matter more than the country?
An autonomous system number identifies the network that announces the address to the internet. It tells you whether an address belongs to AWS, to a residential ISP, or to a hosting provider that rents by the hour — which is far more useful for judging traffic than knowing which country it left from.
Can I look up my own address?
Yes, and it is the fastest way to see what a server sees when you connect: the address your ISP or VPN presents, the network it belongs to, and whether it looks residential or datacentre.

The open-source behind it

This tool is a self-contained implementation. ipinfo/cli (Apache-2.0) does the same job as a library — if you need this behaviour inside your own program, start there rather than calling a web page.
