Translating subtitles is not translating text: each cue has to be read in the two or three seconds it is on screen, sentences are split across cues at the speaker's pace, and the timestamps and numbering must survive untouched or the file will not load. This translator, adapted from the approach VideoLingo uses for its subtitle pipeline, keeps the structure byte for byte and translates only the text lines — compressing for reading speed in the default style or staying faithful when you prefer — and can produce bilingual cues with the translation above the original, the format language learners and bilingual audiences use.

How it works

  • SRT indices, timestamp lines, the WEBVTT header, NOTE blocks, positioning tags and blank lines are preserved exactly; the number of cues never changes.
  • A sentence that runs across cues is translated so that each cue still reads naturally in order, rather than cue by cue in isolation.
  • Formatting tags like <i> and {\an8}, sound cues in brackets and lyrics are handled; lines already in the target language are left alone.

Where your data goes

With your own key, what you type and the key go from your browser straight to the provider you choose; neither passes through Hysen Labs. In hosted mode, your text goes through our server to our provider (DeepSeek) and is billed in credits; we keep the token counts and cost of each run for billing, never the text itself or the answer. How the provider handles the text is governed by its own privacy policy.

This tool handles keys and credentials, so nothing about a run is saved, not even to your own history.

About your API key

We do not collect, store or leak your key: it lives only in this page's memory (unless you tick “remember in this tab”) and is gone when you close it. Still, treat any key you have pasted into a web page with care — create a dedicated key with a spending cap for use here, and delete or rotate it in your provider's dashboard when you are done.

What it costs

Common questions

How long a file can I translate at once?
A typical 20-minute episode of 300–400 cues fits in one request on current models. For a feature film, split the SRT at a scene break into two or three parts and paste each; the cue numbers in each part stay as they are, so the parts concatenate back into one file.
Why is the translation shorter than the original?
The concise style is doing its job: viewers read slower than people speak, so professional subtitlers cut fillers and shorten phrasing to keep each line under about 42 Latin or 20 CJK characters. Switch to the faithful style when the wording matters more than reading speed — a lecture, a legal deposition.
Can it generate subtitles from a video?
Not this tool — it translates an existing file. Run the audio through the speech-to-text tool first, choose SRT output, and paste the result here; both run without uploading the media anywhere.

The open-source behind it

This tool's prompt is adapted from Huanshere/VideoLingo (Apache-2.0) and runs on the model you choose. To use the same capability from the command line or inside your own program, start with that project.
