AI background remover
Cut the background out of a portrait with a matting model running in your browser — a transparent PNG in seconds, nothing uploaded.
Or choose them. Files are processed in this tab and never uploaded to any server.
Background removal used to mean uploading your photo to a service and trusting it with the file. This tool runs MODNet, an open portrait-matting network, inside the browser tab with transformers.js and ONNX Runtime: the 7 MB model downloads once, the photo never leaves your device, and the result is a PNG with a real alpha channel — soft edges around hair included — or a JPEG on a white or black background for a profile picture or an ID photo. It is the same job rembg does on a server, done locally.
How it works
- Drop a JPEG, PNG or WebP; the model estimates an alpha matte for the person and the image is composited onto transparency or the fill colour you chose.
- The first run downloads the quantised MODNet weights from the Hugging Face Hub and caches them; later runs start immediately.
- The stats report the share of the image kept as foreground and the output size, so you can tell at a glance whether the matte caught the subject.
Where your data goes
Nowhere. This tool runs entirely in your browser: the text you paste is processed by the page and is never transmitted to a server or written to a log.
This tool is free and needs no account. Its results exist only in your open page and are not saved anywhere.
What it costs
This tool is free, with no sign-in and no points.
Common questions
- Does it work on products, pets and logos?
- MODNet is trained on people, so portraits, half-body and full-body photos are where it is accurate. Objects and animals sometimes come out acceptably and sometimes do not — for product shots, rembg with its isnet-general-use model or BiRefNet on a machine with a GPU will do better.
- What resolution does it handle?
- The matte is computed at the model's working resolution and upscaled to the original, so output dimensions match your input up to the 30 MB limit. Very fine detail — single strands of hair against a busy background — is where a browser-sized model shows its limits.
- Is the model licence suitable for commercial use?
- MODNet is Apache-2.0, as is the ONNX conversion used here, so the cutouts are yours to use. That is one reason this tool does not use the more capable RMBG models from BRIA, whose weights are licensed for non-commercial use only.
The open-source behind it
This tool is a self-contained implementation. danielgatis/rembg (MIT) does the same job as a library — if you need this behaviour inside your own program, start there rather than calling a web page.
