One simplified character can map to several traditional ones — 发 is 發 in 发展 and 髮 in 头发 — and Taiwan and Hong Kong use different words for the same thing: mainland 软件 and 内存 are 軟體 and 記憶體 in Taiwan. This converter uses OpenCC, the open-source project behind most serious Chinese conversion, with its own dictionaries and presets, so it picks characters from the surrounding phrase and, with the Taiwan preset, rewrites the vocabulary too.
How it works
- s2twp converts to Traditional Chinese as written in Taiwan, words included; s2tw uses Taiwan's characters but keeps mainland wording; s2hk uses Hong Kong's characters; s2t gives OpenCC's standard traditional characters.
- The reverse presets — tw2sp, tw2s, hk2s and t2s — turn Taiwan, Hong Kong or standard traditional text back into Simplified Chinese, tw2sp also rewriting Taiwan wording as mainland wording.
- Text that is not Chinese passes through untouched, so mixed Chinese and English documents, Markdown and code comments can be converted as they are.
- The number of characters changed is shown, so you can tell at a glance whether the preset did anything.

Common questions
- Which preset should I use for Taiwan?
- s2twp. It converts the characters and replaces mainland vocabulary with Taiwan's — 鼠标 becomes 滑鼠, 打印 becomes 列印, 网络 becomes 網路. s2tw changes only the characters, which reads as mainland text written in traditional characters, and Taiwanese readers notice immediately.
- Is the conversion always correct?
- No automatic conversion is. OpenCC resolves most one-to-many characters from the phrase they appear in, but a rare word, a name or a pun can still come out wrong, and some words are used on both sides of the strait. For published text, have a native reader of the target region go over it.
- Is traditional Chinese the same in Taiwan and Hong Kong?
- Largely, not entirely. A few characters have different standard forms — 裡 in Taiwan, 裏 in Hong Kong — and everyday vocabulary differs, often more than people expect. That is why OpenCC has separate presets for the two.
